2013-2015: Neoplatonic Heritages in Corpus Dionysiacum

Abstract

This project is placed in the context of Late Antiquity, at the crossroads of the Neoplatonic philosophical thought and of the Christian theological meditation, focusing on the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. Specifically, I intend to discuss the Neoplatonic sources of the Corpus Dionysiacum, examining by means of a philosophical and philological method the fundamental idea which runs throughout the meditation of Pseudo-Dionysius and the Neoplatonic tradition: the existence of a first principle beyond being and thinking. The core of my analysis is represented by three fundamental themes: the overcoming of being, the unknowing of God, and the role of discourse. My aim is a double one: on the one hand, to find out what Pseudo-Dionysius actually takes from the Neoplatonic tradition; on the other hand, to discover the decisive aspects in which he exceeds this tradition, by the new solutions he gives to these Neoplatonic philosophical problems.
